- IIT Madras is the Organizing Institute for JAM 2016.
- JAM 2016 Examination will be conducted ONLINE only as a Computer Based Test (CBT) for all Test Papers.
- All the seven Test Papers of JAM 2016 will be of fully objective type, with three different patterns of questions as follows:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) : Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) : Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions : For each NAT type question, the answer is a signed real number which needs to be entered using the virtual keypad on the monitor.A virtual calculator will also be available on the computer monitor.No choices will be shown for these type of questions.
- All candidates have to apply only ONLINE.
- NO hardcopies of any documents are to be sent to the Organizing Institute.If the payment is by e-challan then the scanned (Institute) copy (.pdf file) on the JOAPS site by logging in your Application account.The documents(certificates,mark-sheet,etc) are to be uploaded to the online application website only.
- No hardcopy of JAM 2016 score card will be sent to the JAM 2016 qualified candidates by the Organizing Institute. It can only be downloaded from JAM 2016 website.
Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) 2016 will be held on February 07, 2016 (Sunday) for admission to Integrated Ph.D. degree programmes at IISc Bangalore (IISc) and M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree, M.Sc.-M.Tech., and other post-Bachelor degree programmes at IITs (Bhubaneswar (IITBBS), Bombay (IITB), Delhi (IITD), Gandhinagar (IITGN), Guwahati (IITG), Hyderabad (IITH), Indore (IITI), Jodhpur (IITJ), Kanpur (IITK), Kharagpur (IITKgp), Madras (IITM), Patna (IITP), Roorkee (IITR) and Ropar (IITRPR)) for the academic session 2016-17. However, JAM score may also be used by other Institutions for admission to their programmes. JAM 2016 is open to all nationals. But, foreign nationals will be required to satisfy the rules and regulations of the Admitting Institute(s) pertaining to foreign students for admission.
JAM 2016 is being organized by IIT Madras. All correspondence related to JAM 2016 must be addressed to Organizing Chairman, JAM 2016, GATE-JAM Office, IIT Madras, Chennai - 600036.
Test Papers and Mode of Examination: JAM 2016 will have seven test papers, namely, Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) and Physics (PH), each of three hours duration. For all the papers, JAM 2016 examination will be conducted in ONLINE mode only. A candidate can appear in either one or two test papers subject to the restrictions of test schedule given below and by paying an additional fee for the second test paper.

- All candidates admitted through JAM should have a Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 55% aggregate marks, without rounding off, (taking into account all subjects, including Languages and Subsidiaries, all years combined) for General/OBC-NCL Category Candidates and at least 50% aggregate marks, without rounding off, (taking into account all subjects, including Languages and Subsidiaries, all years combined) for SC/ST and PwD Category Candidates in the qualifying degree.
For Candidates with letter grades/CGPA (instead of percentage of marks), the equivalence in percentage of marks will be decided by the Admitting Institute(s).
Proof of having passed the Qualifying Degree with the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQ) as specified by the admitting institute should be submitted by September 30, 2016.
At the time of admission, all admitted candidates will have to submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed form. At the time of admission, the admitted candidates may also have to undergo a physical fitness test by a medical board constituted by the Admitting Institute. In case a candidate is not found physically fit to pursue his/her chosen course of study, his/her admission is liable to be cancelled.
Note:
- It will entirely be the responsibility of the Candidate to prove that he/she satisfies the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) and Eligibility Requirements (ERs) for Admissions.
- The Admitting Institute has the right to cancel, at any stage, the admission of a candidate who is found to have been admitted to a course to which he/she is not entitled, being unqualified or ineligible in accordance with the rules and regulations in force.

Admission to the above mentioned academic programmes in IISc Bangalore and IITs for the academic session 2016-17 will be made on the basis of all India merit list of JAM 2016. Candidates who qualify in any test paper of JAM 2016 shall be eligible to apply for admission to all the academic programmes corresponding to that test paper, provided they also satisfy the minimum educational qualifications and the eligibility requirements, as specified by the Institute(s) in which the admission is sought. After the declaration of JAM 2016 results, qualified candidates shall be required to apply to the Organizing Institute (IIT Madras) specifying their preferences for the programmes for which the admission is sought. Candidates should note that being in the merit list of any test paper neither guarantees nor provides any automatic entitlement for admission. Further details regarding admissions, prescribed fees, etc. will be updated on the JAM 2016 website.
JOAPS (JAM online Application Processing System)
The candidates can do most of their interactions with JAM through the JOAPS interface provided at JAM 2016 website. Through JOAPS, a candidate can register and apply for JAM 2016, check the status of the application, download of admit card, know the result and download of score card, etc.
Once a candidate registers at JOAPS he/she will get the Enrolment ID and would be able to set the password.At the time of registration as a new user a candidate will be asked to fill in his name,e-mail address,mobile number and a password.once submission is done the JOAPS site would send the Enrolment ID to his/her mobile as a SMS.This Enrolment ID and given password should be used for further log in.
Information/Document Requirements for Filling in Application Form
Before registering and logging in to JOAPS, a candidate is advised to keep the following information/documents ready:
- Personal information (name, E-mail address, mobile number, date of birth, parent’s name, parent’s mobile number, etc.).
- Address for communication (including PIN code).
- Eligibility degree details (Name of the degree,percentage of marks/CGPA, college information).
- JAM test paper(s) for which a candidate wishes to appear.
- Three choices of JAM examination cities.A candidate can choose the first two choice from a zone.The third choice is meant as All India Choice,that is,any center in the list.However it may also be choosen from the same zone as choosen for choices 1 and 2.A list is available at the JAM site http://jam.iitm.ac.in/jam2016
- Good quality image (in .jpeg format) of the candidate's photograph conforming to the requirements specified in Photograph Requirements on pages 8-10 of the JAM 2016 Information Brochure available at JAM site.see also page 2 & 3 below
- Good quality image (in .jpeg format) of the candidate's signature conforming to the requirements specified in Signature Specifications on page 11 of the JAM 2016 Information Brochure.see also page 2 and 3 below.
- Scanned copy of SC/ST/PwD Certificates in pdf format only (if applicable)
- Details of a valid ID Proof the candidate carry to the examination hall (any one of the following: Aadhar ID, College ID, Driving License, Employee ID, PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID)
- Netbanking login and password to make the application fee payment via online net banking mode. In case the payment is to be made through debit card/credit card, then have the following information like debit card/credit card number, password, CVV number ready with you.
Step-1: Registration at JAPS
A candidate who wish to apply for JAM 2016 examination must first register on the JOAPS website, by providing his/her name, a valid E-mail address, a working mobile number and a password. Please note that Name of the Candidate, Email Address and Mobile Number (10 digits) cannot be changed in the later stage, hence they MUST BE carefully verified and confirmed before submission.
- The candidate must give the name as it appears in the certificates.
- The candidate must give an e-mail address that he/she uses and checks frequently, as all communications to the candidate from JAM 2016 will be sent to this e-mail address.The candidate must not use somebody else's e-mail address andonly one candidate can be registered with one E-mail address.
- The candidate should provide his/her personal mobile number because most of the communications may also be sent via SMS.
- The password that the candidate provides should be chosen so that it cannot be guessed easily by others and this JOAPS password must not be forgotten by the candidate as he/she will require it to login to the JOAPS website.
Upon successful registration, an e-mail containing your JOAPS enrolment ID will be sent to the e-mail address provided by the candidate. The enrolment ID will also be sent to the mobile number provided by the candidate.The candidate needs to use this JOAPS enrolment ID along with the JOAPS password for all JAM 2016 related communications or website operations.
Step-2: Filling in the Application Form
Upon logging in to the JOAPS website,the candidate needs to fill in information, such as the number and choice of test paper(s) that he/she wishes to appear, city choices, date of birth, gender, parent/guardian's name and mobile number, nationality, category, PwD(Person with disability)status,address for communication, details of valid personal ID information, information on qualifying degree, percentage of marks/CGPA, status of graduation, college information, etc.
After filling in the required information,the candidate has to upload the image files (in .jpeg format) of photograph and signature. A scanned copy of SC/ST and/or PwD certificates (in .pdf format) are also to be uploaded, if applicable. The JOAPS website allows saving a partially filled application form, logging out and resuming filling up the application by logging in again.
The candidate should check for the correctness of the entered information and uploaded documents. If not satisfied, he/she can correct the entries and upload the files again. After ensuring that there is no error in the application form and all the relevant and valid documents are uploaded, the candidate must carefully read the declaration and accept the declaration before submitting the application. A candidate will be able to download the whole application including his photograph,signature and scanned copies of the documents in a .pdf format.once he/she ascertains the correctness the application is ready for submission. Once the candidate submits his/her application, then no further changes can be made to the application. After the application form is submitted, the candidate can then also view the submitted details and download the duly filled application form.
Any application which is incomplete in any respect and does not have the required valid documents will be summarily rejected. The candidates must take care to fill in the details in the application form correctly and must upload the correct and valid documents, including signatures and photographs.

Step-3: Payment of the Application Fee
After the application form is submitted, the candidate can now proceed to make the application fee payment. The details of the application fee specific to Gender/Category are given below. The application fee is non refundable.

The application fee can be paid either Online or through e-Challan via State Bank of India, as detailed below. Additional bank charges may apply for the above transactions.Online Payment Mode:
If a candidate chooses to pay through online payment mode, then the payment can be made using the netbanking account, debit or credit cards,until October 14,2015(wednesday). The charges may vary depending on the payment option.
- The candidate will be redirected from the JOAPS website to State Bank of India's MOPS (Multi Option Payment System) site.
- The candidate has to choose the appropriate option through which he/she wishes to make the payment, like SBI netbanking, SBI
- Debit Card, Other Banks Debit Cards, Credit Cards, Other Banks Internet Banking.
- The application fee amount and the charges for the selected option will be shown to the candidate and he/she has to confirm that the payment is for JAM 2016.
- Once confirmed and the payment is successful, the candidate will be redirected back to the JOAPS website.
In case of some difficulty (due to internet connection or power failure), and the candidate is not sure whether the payment has been processed or not, then he/she login back to JOAPS and check the status of the payment. It can also be checked from the bank/card.
In case the fee amount has been debited from the bank account/debit card/credit card, and JOAPS does not acknowledge any fee payment, then the money will be credited back to your account/debit card/credit card within three working days. In such a case, you may initiate a fresh payment using JOAPS, even without waiting for the money to be credited back to the account/debit card/credit card, so that the application can be completed in time.
Challan Payment Mode:
In case the candidate chooses the challan payment mode, then a challan will be generated (as a .pdf file). The candidate has to take the printout of the challan and the payment should be made in cash at any SBI branch latest by october 14,2015 (wednesday).
- The candidate will be redirected from the JOAPS website to State Bank of India's MOPS (Multi Option Payment System).
- The candidate has to choose the option 'SBI Branch' under 'Other Payment Modes' for challan payment.
- The application fee amount and the bank charges for the challan option will be shown to the candidate and he/she has to confirm that the payment is for JAM 2016.
- Once confirmed, a challan as a .pdf file will be generated on the next page as a link. The candidate can download the challan and take a printout of the challan.
- Afterwards, the candidate will be redirected back to the JOAPS website and the challan will also be available on JOAPS website for download.
- The candidate can now make the payment in cash at any SBI branch.
- After the payment is successful, the payment information gets updated in the candidate's JOAPS login typically within 72 hours. The candidate must login to JOAPS for this information. They may contact the JAM office in case this information is not updated.
- Once the payment information is updated, then the candidate has to upload the SBI-stamped 'Institute Copy' of the challan in JOAPS.
- Finally, the candidate is required to send the SBI-stamped 'Institute Copy' of the challan to the organizing Institute, by post at the address 'Organizing Chairman, JAM 2016, IIT Madras, Chennai - 600036'.
Note:
If the fee paid is NOT as per the Gender and Category, and the number of Test Paper(s), entered in the Application Form, then the filled in form will be rejected without any intimation to the candidate.
Step-4: Downloading the Application Form
After JOAPS acknowledges the successful payment of the application fee (through online/challan), the candidate will be able to download the complete filled in application form with fee payment details and uploaded documents in .pdf format. This file can be printed for the candidate's personal records and for further communications,if required.
With the submission of application form and JOAPS acknowledging the successful fee payment, the candidate has successfully submitted the application for JAM 2016.
The candidate must remember JOAPS enrolment ID and JOAPS password, and must login periodically to see the status of his application, to download the admit card and to know the results later. He/she is also advised to keep visiting JAM 2016 website for any query or updated information.
Document Specifications
Photograph Requirements
The candidates must pay attention to upload good quality photographs.Poor quality of photographs submitted will lead to rejection of their JAM application, without any refund of the application fees. The JAM admit card and score card will be generated with the photograph that was submitted along with the application form.
- The photograph must be in color and must be taken in a professional studio. Photograph taken using a Mobile phone and other self-composed portraits are NOT acceptable.
- Photograph must be taken with white or very light background.
- The photograph must have been taken after 1st July 2015.
- In the photograph, the height of the face (between chin and the top of the forehead) should occupy about 50% of the height of the photograph.
- The main features of the face must not be covered by hair of the head, any cloth or any shadow. The photograph must show full frontal view with both ears being visible and eyes open.
- If the candidate normally wears spectacles, glare on glasses is not acceptable in his/her photo. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses for the photo shoot.
- The candidate must not wear spectacles with dark or tinted glasses, only clear glasses are permitted.
- Ask the photo studio to provide the image in a JPEG format and also on a standard 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm print (Width x Height).
- Maximum pixel resolution for JPEG: 480 x 640 (.03 Mega Pixel) (Ask the studio to reduce it to this resolution if it is higher).
- File size should be between 5KB and 100KB.
- Minimum pixel resolution for JPEG: 240 x 320.11.
- For the candidate's own benefit it may be prudent not to intentionally change his/her facial features or hair style as in the photograph until the day of the exam.

Signature Specifications
- Please draw a rectangular box of size 7 cm × 2 cm (Width x Height) on an A4 white paper. The candidate should put his/her signature with black or dark blue ink pen within this box.
- Get the signature digitally image scanned by a professional using a scanner, and get the image cropped to the box by the professional.
- Maintain 420 pixels in width and 120 pixels in height.
- Only JPEG image formats will be accepted.
- The maximum pixel resolution for the image is 560 × 160.
- The minimum pixel resolution for the image is 280 × 80.
- Photographs of the signatures taken using mobile phone or digital cameras are not acceptable, and can result in disqualification of the application without any refund of the fee.
SC/ST/PwD Certificate
- Applicants who claim to be in any of the category SC/ST/PwD have to submit valid document issued by competent authority, to qualify for the reduced fee.
- Applicants who require a scribe to assist writing the exam, also need to provide a valid PwD certificate.
Authorities Empowered to Issue Certificates (SC/ST)
- District Magistrate/ Additional District Magistrate/ Collector/ Deputy Collector/ Deputy Commissioner/ Additional Deputy Commissioner/ 1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate/ City Magistrate/ Sub-Divisional Magistrate/ Taluk Magistrate/ Executive Magistrate/ Extra Assistant Commissioner.
- Chief Presidency Magistrate/ Additional Chief Presidency Magistrate/ Presidency Magistrate.
- Revenue Officer not below the rank of Tahsildar.
- Sub-Divisional Officer of the area where the Candidate and/or her/his family normally resides
- Administrator/ Secretary to Administrator/ Development Officer (Lakshadweep Islands)
- Certificate issued by any other official will not be accepted.
PwD Category
For PwD candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, and/or cerebral palsy), benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment with respect to a body part/system/extremity/whole body, etc. In order to avail concession under the PwD category, the candidates should upload a recently obtained valid PwD certificate.
A PwD candidate, if needed, can take the assistance of a Scribe during the JAM 2016 examination.A Scribe is a person who can assist the PwD candidate by ONLY reading the instructions and the test paper displayed on the computer screen verbatim, and also in mouse-clicks, if the candidate is not able to do so. If the scribe is needed, then a PwD candidate should confirm the requirement of a scribe while filling up the application.
